medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Herewith a link to an earlier 'Saints of the day' for 7. May (including St. Domitilla; St. Maurelius of Ferrara; St. Cerenicus; St. John of Beverley; Bl. Heilika of Niedernburg; Bl. Gisela of Hungary; St. Anthony of Kyiv [Kiev]):

Further to Maurelius of Ferrara:
In that earlier post's notice of this saint, the link to a view of him as portrayed on a mid-fifteenth-century coin from Ferrara no longer takes one there. Expandable views of two other examples will be found near the bottom of this page:

In the same notice, after the link to a view of Maurelius in a panel painting by Cosmè Tura now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC add these views of Maurelius' condemnation to death and Maurelius' execution as depicted by the same artist in two _tondi_ of ca. 1480 now in the Pinacoteca nazionale di Ferrara:

Further to John of Beverley:
In that earlier post's notice of this saint, two of the links to views of his originally twelfth- to fourteenth-century church at Harpham (East Yorks) no longer function. Herewith a new set of views:

Towards the end of the set of interior views is one of the modern marker for the Minster's putative relics of John of Beverley. A description of these will be found under 'Veneration' here:

Gordon Plumb's post of 2011 with a link to John of Beverley as depicted in the West Window of York Minster is here:

Further to Anthony of Kyiv (Kiev):
In that earlier post's notice of this saint, the link to the third of the English-language accounts of the Kyiv (Kiev)-Pechersk Lavra is to a Google Books version that may not be accessible by some readers. The matter in question is at pp. 162-164 of Brad Olsen, _Sacred Places Europe: 108 Destinations_ (CCC Publishing, 2007).
Today (7. May) is also the feast day of:
Flavius of Nicomedia and four companions (d. early 4th cent.?). The later fourth-century Syriac Martyrology enters under this day Flavius of Nicomedia and four confessors (i.e. martyrs). That they are not identified as 'ancient' confessors suggests that they were victims of the Great Persecution. In a textually troubled entry the (pseudo-)Hieronymian Martyrology, which shares a common source with the aforementioned Syriac Martyrology, records under today as martyrs of Nicomedia bishop Flavius [and] three brothers (i.e. companions): _In Nicomedia natalis sanctorum Flavii episcopi Augusti Augustini trium fratrum_. Not surprisingly, this jumble led Florus of Lyon and others after him to think that Flavius' companions were named Augustus and Augustinus and that the three were brothers in a literal sense. It's now thought that _Augusti_ and _Augustini_ probably refer to the same person, that he had wandered in from some other entry (this is not unusual in the [ps.-]HM) before the doubling occurred, and that the original entry for Flavius et socc. was on the order of _In Nicomedia, natalis sanctorum Flavii episcopi et trium fratrum_. In that case, the three names that follow without a geographic indication of their own (Marcellinus, Macrobius, and Eutychius) could be those of the companions as transmitted by the (ps.-)HM.
Best,
John Dillon
