We, Research Center for Ars Vivendi, would like you to read
Professor Sakiyama's "Emotion Management at Huge Earthquake".
Dear all,
As you know, the Huge Earthquake occurred at the north part of
Japan last year. Even now, Japanese government and people have made
every efforts to reconstruct the buildings, fields, harbor, and so
on around the area. A lot of students of Ritsumeikan University
have also helped them as volunteer.
In such kind of operations, Japanese people have noticed "damages"
as a result of this severe disaster. We have tried to repair, not
only the material damage but also the mental damage.
As Professor Allan Young suggested, some of the mental illnesses
have been invented throughout wars and severe damages. Then,
societies cured them. In Japan, the idea of PTSD attracted much
attention at the time of Huge Earthquake at Osaka, Kobe area in
1995.
From the experience, many Japanese people understand the importance
of caring for emotions of humanbeings. The Ministry of Education
sends counselor to schools. Moreover, as Professor Pam Smith has
conducted research in U.K., many care workers would like to do
"good" emotional labour.
Nowadays, many scholars and organizations try to listen to suffers
of these huge disasters. As Professor Arthur Frank suggested, there
are various narratives depending on perspectives and social
positions. It is time to listen to their narratives now.
In the end, our Center would like to collaborate with you, and
design the "good" society together. Therefore, we always appreciate
your suggestions and cooperation.
Sincerely Yours,
Haruo Sakiyama
Vice Dean, Research Center for Ars Vivendi, Ritsumeikan University
