A bloody good question, I have often wondered that myself. I do not think there is much place for those institutions that currently go by that name, I would like to see a return to the medieval "Universitas" free from the political and economic crap that has polluted learning over at least a century and a half.
I belong in a world of scholarship and knowledge, not in this half world of fake qualifications, pretence and distorted "research"
