Hi, David!
My own take on the circumambulation issue proceeds
from my experience as a practitioner of Mediaeval
and Daemonic Astrology. We view the world as did
the Stoics, as cycles nested within cycles.
Taking Astrological Elections as an example, we
consider and select occasions that correspond with
the beginnings of astrally congruent cycles in order
to initiate tasks that fall within the purview of
one or more celestial entities / processes; just
as a surfer tries to 'catch a wave', so, too, do
we apply the momentum of the Cosmos to our Mundane
moments.
The Astral Magic of the grimoires is founded on
Tropical Astrology which is, in its turn, based
upon the Rotation of the Stoics' Four Classical
Elements throughout the Day and the Year, and as
experienced by a Practitioner located upon the
surface of the Earth.
First, we consider the Height of the Sun above
the Horizon, and that Point at which the Sun is
at its Height is the 'Noon' of both the Day and
the Year, and this is the Angle of Fire.
Noon is the Warmest and Brightest time of the Day,
and Summer is the Warmest and Brightest time of
the Year.
In the Northern Hemisphere, this is in the South,
and in the South, this is in the North.
Likewise, the Point of 'Midnight' for the Year is
the Angle of Water.
Midnight is the Coldest and Darkest time of the Day,
and Winter is the Coldest and Darkest time of the
Year.
In the Northern Hemisphere, this is in the North,
and in the Southern Hemisphere, this is in the South.
The Spring of the Year is attributed to Air in both
Hemispheres, even though the Spring of the Southern
Hemisphere occurs during the Autumn of the Northern
Hemisphere.
Likewise, the Autumn of the Year is attributed to
Earth in both Hemispheres, although the Autumn of
the Southern Hemisphere occurs during the Spring of
the North.
A practitioner facing South in the Northern Hemisphere
throughout the Course of a Day will witness the Sun
rising in the East at their left hand, and moving in
a /clockwise/ direction as it sweeps up to Noon in the
South and then down to the West at their right hand.
A practitioner facing North in the Southern Hemisphere
throughout the Course of a Day will witness the Sun
rising in the East at their right hand, and moving in
a /counter-clockwise/ direction as it sweeps up to Noon
in the North and then down to the West at their left
hand.
Once again, it is primarily the Four Seasons and *not*
the Signs of the Zodiac that determine the Assignments of
the Four Elements to the Four Directions of the Compass.
Spring will always be of Air, and Sanguine.
Autumn, Melancholic and Earthy.
Summer will be Fiery/Choleric and Winter will be Watery/
Phlegmatic.

'That's a very queer story,' said Cotgrave, handing
back the green book to the recluse, Ambrose. 'I see
the drift of a good deal, but there are many things
that I do not grasp at all. On the last page, for
example, what does she mean by "nymphs"?'
'Well, I think there are references throughout the
manuscript to certain "processes" which have been
handed down by tradition from age to age.
Some of these processes are just beginning to come
within the purview of science, which has arrived at
them — or rather at the steps which lead to them —
by quite different paths.
I have interpreted the reference to "nymphs" as a
reference to one of these processes.'
'And you believe that there are such things?'
'Oh, I think so. Yes, I believe I could give you
convincing evidence on that point.'
