Hi Louise
We do use RFID for issue and return but we don't use any field in Millennium - we do the reverse and just encode the barcode onto the RFID tag. This is very quick and easy and requires no work in Millennium. During conversion, staff worked along the shelves sticking in RFID tags and encoding them with barcodes using a scanner.
If you don't use RFID for issue/return I'm not sure that usage stats can be recorded on the tag itself so worth checking with your RFID vendor.
Security is fine for us, but not as reliable as the magnetic strip as the RFID radio tag can be masked by things like foil or crisp packets and is more visible so open to vandalism. We do have a PC at the gate however which links to Millennium and flags up the title on screen of un issued book which has triggered the alarm.
In terms of stock control, we have PDAs and wands supplied by our RFID supplier (DTech) which record barcodes and these are basically run against lists from Millennium for stock checking. Running against a shelf order list immediately identified missing and misplaced books not otherwise accounted for by being out on loan and helps find things quickly. Different wands vary in effectiveness and ease of use though so that's down to the manufacturer.
We didn't get Circa - very expensive.
Hope that helps

Subject: RFID and Millennium
Hi all
We are tentatively looking at RFID for our library. We almost certainly won't be using if for self-issue and returns, but are investigating it for book security and for stock management functions (stock taking, stock usage, missing books etc.).
My question is: what configuration (in general terms) needs to be done in Millennium to integrate RFID and enable the RFID tag to be read (e.g. which field is used for the RFID code in item records)? I think we would need additional products, but I'm not sure what - I've read about 'Circa' in the manual, but it's difficult to find a good overview of what this product does.
Also, if you have any feedback on how successful RFID has been in your library (in terms of book security and stock management), that would be very useful too.
Any advice or pointers to further information gratefully received.
Many thanks
Louise
