medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello Meg,
Almost any image of the Fall of the Rebel Angels will show some aspect
of this: my favourite is that in the Tres Riches Heures, although St
Michael is fairly anonymous among the group of good angels dressed like
contemporary soldiers. There is also the remarkable wing panel of a
triptych attributed to Petrus Christus in the Gemaldegalerie in Berlin,
dated 1452, depicting the Last Judgement in which, instead of weighing
souls, St Michael in plate armour brandishes a sword at a prone figure
of the devil while he stands on the outstretched arms of Death,
represented as a huge skeleton forming the vault of hell -- another of
my favourites!

I am far more familiar with images of him fighting the devil in the form of a serpent, with a lance/spear as his weapon. My questions for the list is whether those of you familiar with the iconography can provide information about either pictures or texts which depict him:

> 2) leading an angelic host, whether on horseback or on foot
