medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Chapter 6 is pp.179-209 and Appendix V is pp.239-251. Harvey says that
the institution takes off in the 12th century, reaching a peak c.1300
and declining thereafter. In the earlier period it tends to be funded by
real property (although this is probably masking a policy of reclaiming
alienated monastic property) and by money in the latter period.
