Dear David...I have worked with many kinds of leather...so 'am familiar. How would you like to proceed?

Subject: [ZOOARCH] Leather identification?
Hello All,
I’m posting the following question for a colleague:
“Do you know if a leather or other sort of expert might be able to distinguish between cow and deer hide from a piece of worked leather from just a visual examination? We have a piece of leather that might have been used for footwear and is over 100 yrs old (excavated in 1950) and are trying to determine the type of leather.”
Thanks for any contacts or ideas!
Sincerely,
David Dyer
