medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

there certainly is in royal "private" chapels.
think (just off the top of my head) Charlmagne's "private" chapel at
Aix-la-Chapelle/Aachen --i think that his throne is still up in the gallery.
(is San Vitale in Ravenna, with its gallery, not a model for Aix?)
the "Westwerke" of innumerable German churches --cathedrals and abbeys-- from
Carolingian time forward, had openings in their upper floors, facing east to
accommodate royal guests (and others belonging to the 1% of their day) who did
not wish to rub shoulders with either the hoi or the poloi.
at least i *assume* that that is the tradition behind Hank8's balcony (which i
have not seen and therefore my expertise on the subject is blissfully
unencumbered by any knowledge of it whatsoever).
