> Matthew of Beauvais (d. ca. 1097).
the Definitive Wikipedia (.fr) article on various sorts of Holy Matts
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthieu#Saints_chr.C3.A9tiens
suggests "(+1100)" which might as much sense as "ca. 1097) if he actually went
on the 1st. Crusade, though the latter date suggests that he might have been
martyred at the Siege of Nicaea (early 1007, < 18 June), or perhaps an early
casualty at the Siege of Antioch (> 20 Oct., 1097).
i suppose we won't know for sure until someone writes the Definitive Wikipedia
(.fr) article on him
http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Matthieu_de_Beauvais&action=edit&redlink=1
of course, we DO have this more or less Definitive contemporary portrait

>said to have been a knight in the household of bishop Roger of Beauvais
this is what piqued my interest in him.
Bishop Roger II of B. apparently died on the crusade, in 1096
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_%C3%A9v%C3%AAques_de_Beauvais
i was wondering whether he might have been the "Vidame" of Beauvais --a lay
knight who functioned as the chief military man of a bishop, in charge of
fulfilling whatever feudal military obligations the latter might have had
through his holdings from (particularly) the king.
this quite excellent recent study of the Bs of B by one of the Lights of the
Ecole des Chartes should surely have something to say about Matt

though he's not in the index under "Mathieu" (p. 296).
which suggests that he probably wasn't the Vidame.
also of use might be
Dugas, . “Le mouvement de croisade dans le Beauvaisis, le Valois et le
Vermandois,” Mémoires de la Société d’histoire et d’archéologie de

should anyone have a copy of that at hand.
