back in the '60s we had a similar concept

i am interested to see that it is expected to take *40* years to build what
seems to be a rather medium sized building
http://cdn4.spiegel.de/images/image-261517-galleryV9-ychh.jpg
of course, the funds are quite limited and the working crew is thus
necessarily small.
(also a disadvantage is the pre-Gothic style which is inherently not as easy
or economical to build in.)
i happen to be, at present, toying with my own schnapsidee/Mare's Nest: that
at least a few bays of a medium sized Early Gothic building
http://www.ariadne.org/cc/etampes/interior/northchapels.jpg
could have been built in no more than three years[/building seasons], provided
(as i believe to have been the case) funding for it was virtually unlimited
--it was a royal project-- which would have allowed for as many skilled and
unskilled men as necessary, from the quarry and the forest (wood for the roof)
to the church building site itself.
under such a scenario, i have about reached the conclusion that the major
constraints on building construction and completion would have been the quite
mundane ones related to purely material factors --like the drying time of
mortar, which (presumably?) would have limited the number of horizontal stone
courses which could have been completed in a single building season.
so, the question then becomes: precisely how many courses could be put up in a
single season?
trying to figure that out has caused me to just about run out of schnaps,
however, and i may have to resort to the psychotropic remedies which Mr.
Zimmerman speaks of in the above link.
> If you want anything to know about the St. Gall-Plan, consult
http://www.stgallplan.org/index.html
the only thing i would like to know about it just at present is how long it
would take to build the thing, given unlimited funds being made available.
i don't think i have ever seen the verso of that famous leaf
http://www.stgallplan.org/verso.html
thanks for that, Karl.
