Hi Duncan
I agree there are some woolly areas, but we try and take a firm line with our tutors so they know what the boundaries are, and what we as a department consider what is acceptable and what isn't to try and protect all parties.

I take the same view as you, but beware, OCR have no published rules on the conduct of these exams and will tend to allow the tutors to be granted concessions such as being present, looking at the papers during the window, etc. JCQ rules contain the weasel words "Awarding bodies may issue supplementary instructions for a specific qualification, to which you should refer" meaning that you can be undermined at any time.

Hi Michelle
We do use teaching rooms for these exams as these have the audio software etc installed on them.
The tutor is in the room as the technical support, the rest is down to the invigilator.
The invigilator picks up the papers in the normal way so they are kept secure up until the exam. Once in the room they are in charge.
I would have a word with their line manager and spell out the JCQ regulations for the security of exam papers etc and that the invigilator is in charge of the exam etc to pass on to all their staff.
As with an earlier thread today, we are the ones who would get it in the neck if anything went wrong or a JCQ Inspector walked in not the tutor!
Good Luck.

Can someone share their procedure for the above exams please, I'm
struggling with a tutor who insists on staying in the room to offer
technical support but then 'takes over' the invigilation procedures. In
particular I have the following questions:
- these exams have been held in a teaching room, I suspect because of
ease for the tutor but I'm not happy with this should I insist that they
move to our exam rooms
- the tutor requests that the papers are given to her prior to the exam
and she gives them out on the exam day, again I'm not happy with this
- my invigilator is made to feel a bit of a spare part during the exam
as the tutor was reading out instructions etc
These problems have all been inherited since I took on the role, exams were
invigilated by one of the tutors in the department which I have since
stopped but I'm still not comfortable with the other issues, should I make
the changes I feel right?
Thanks
Michelle
