Hi, David,
Swinburne University of Technology has long had apprenticeship programs integrated into our degree programs under the rubric of Industry Based Learning (IBL) or Industry Placement (IP). In design, these placements constitute the third year of a four-year honors program. Employers take students in for a year and pay them a salary. The university provides seminars and maintains the educational relationship. After their year in industry, our students return to Swinburne for a fourth year, after which they earn the BDes (Hons).
This is the oldest such program in Australia, and one of the oldest in the world. We have been doing this for many years, and we are happy to share our experience with other universities. If you are curious about the details, write to me off-list and I will connect you with Stephen Langdon -- Director of Industry Liaison and Head of Industrial Design, and Jacki Berry, one of our senior administrators. Stephen and Jacki are responsible for these programs at the Faculty and they can answer your questions.
Yours,
Ken
