looking at the third detail on that page,
http://www.insecula.com/PhotosNew/00/00/02/13/ME0000021327_3.JPG
i am curious about what the object which is partially seen with it might be.
a stone set in a fancy holder to be used as a burnisher?
were stones used to burnish parchment?
the style of the decoration of the metalwork (what i can make out of it) does
not seem to be inconsistent with that of the ring

any thoughts?
