Subject: Enquiry regarding innovative library spaces
Dear LIS-PUB-LIBS Members,
We have received an enquiry from a librarian in Germany (Cologne Public
Library) who participates in an international librarians' network called
INELI (International Network of Emerging Library Innovators). The
network is organised and financed by the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation. As part of a two-year co-operation, the INELI groups work
individually on specific subjects. The team the librarian is part of is
researching ways to "re-purpose and re-imagine library spaces".
"We are not looking for brand new library buildings but rather for
projects where existing library rooms have been transformed to fit a new
purpose, e.g. hackerspaces or studios to learn how to play
instruments... The transformation should be attractive and can result in
a flexible multi-purpose setup.
Ideally, the project should not be limited to new furniture and
technology but can involve customised activities and programs. Another
desirable feature of the transformation would be the close involvement
of the community in the planning or even implementation phase (community
engagement). We would like to restrict our research to public libraries
or similar institutions."
If you know examples of such projects or of organisations that might
have relevant experience, we would be most grateful if you could forward
the information to us by replying directly to this email address.
Thank you very much in advance.
Kind regards
Ulla Rieck
