Thanks for all the suggestions on and off list.
There are attached item records. However, the automatic update is not working quite correctly, in that if there are two items at the same site, it repeats the location code in the bibliographic record. So for example if 1 copy were in the main collection (mc), and the other were in the Sion building (sion), if the Sion copy were moved to the main collection, the locations on the bibliographic record then read 'mc, mc'.
I have not found it possible to create a list of such errors by searching the bibliographic records. Searching the item locations in the create lists function does not flag up the errors, because the item locations are correct. This then means that I cannot carry out a global update to delete the unnecessary extra locations, except by manually checking each of the 4000+ bibliographic records attached to the item records I updated. Am I missing something?

I was under the impression that Anna was asking about updating variable
length locations fields when the location in the bib record is 'multi'
but there aren't corresponding attached records to automatically update
bib locations.
I don't think you can have the bib location 'multi' unless there are
some attached records, but it will help if Anna can explain what she is
trying to achieve.
