The INGEBORG BACHMANN CENTRE FOR AUSTRIAN LITERATURE
would like to cordially invite you to
"AUT OF THE BOX: Austrian literature received in China",
a seminar talk by Arnhilt Höfle (IGRS),
this coming Wednesday, 22 February,
at the University of London, Senate House, ST 274,
5-7 pm.
ALL WELCOME!
Abstract: This seminar will give an overview of the turbulent reception history of Austrian literature in China. A glance at the translation records already reveals the diversity of Austrian literature received in China since the early 20th century, when foreign literature was introduced on a larger scale for the first time. Writers of the early 20th century, such as Arthur Schnitzler, Franz Kafka, and, in particular, Stefan Zweig, have been dominating the reception of Austrian literature. More recently, however, contemporary Austrian literature started to play an increasingly important role. After the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Elfriede Jelinek in 2004, China was struck by what could be rightly termed a 'Jelinek fever'. Austrian literature has also been discovered on the Chinese stage lately, including productions of Jelinek, Thomas Bernhard and Peter Handke.
Come to the seminar and get a fascinating insight in the way two very different cultures meet and consolidate their world-views through literature.
We look forward to seeing you!
