Although this very fertile thread full of useful suggestions has expired a while ago, I would just like to let contributors know which films finally made it to the shortlist of 12 screenings. In chronological order, these are:
Fantômas I (Louis Feuillade, France 1913)
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse, Fritz Lang, Germany 1933)
The Invisible Man (James Whale, US 1933)
The Rules of the Game (La règle du jeu, Jean Renoir, France 1939)
Dark Passage (Delmer Daves, US 1947)
Rope (Alfred Hitchcock, US 1948)
A Man Escaped (Un condamné à mort s'est échappé, Robert Bresson, France 1956)
Blow Up (Michelangelo Antonioni, UK 1966)
The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola, US 1974)
Halloween (John Carpenter, US 1978)
The Others (Alejandro Amenabar, US/Spain/France/Italy 2001)
Hidden (Caché, Michael Haneke, France etc. 2005)
Unfortunately, such wonderful examples as Tarkovsky's Stalker, Welles' Touch of Evil, or Bergman's Persona had to be left out for a variety of reasons.
So once again, thanks for all your valuable input!
Henry
