Dear list member,
The STOR-i Doctoral Training Centre is pleased to announce a STOR-i Masterclass at Lancaster University with Professor Suvrajeet Sen from Ohio State University with places available for UK-based PhD students.
For the continuing development of STOR-i students' research knowledge we hold a number of STOR-i masterclasses every year, typically given by visiting international experts in areas of STOR. For more information about STOR-i masterclasses, please visit our website http://www.stor-i.lancs.ac.uk/training/events/masterclasses.
On Tuesday 6th March, Professor Suvrajeet Sen will give a masterclass entitled An Overview of Stochastic Programming Algorithms with abstract below:
Stochastic programming (SP) refers to a subset of optimization models in which uncertainty regarding model parameters are included through the introduction of random variables into what might otherwise have been a deterministic optimization model. Over the years, this class of models have gained increasing attention, and are becoming more commonly adopted in a variety of emerging applications in energy, logistics and other fields. After an initial introduction to such applications, we will delve into the study of algorithms for three major classes of SP models: Two-stage stochastic linear programs, Multi-stage stochastic linear programs, and Two-stage Stochastic Integer Programs. (We will assume some familiarity with deterministic optimization methods).
As part of our commitment to training we are pleased to offer a limited number of masterclass places to PhD students from UK universities. We also have funding available to cover travel costs for a limited number of UK-based PhD students. To support a case for funding we require the title of your PhD, host institution/department/supervisor and a short statement (1/2 page maximum) outlining why attending the masterclass would be beneficial to your studies.
If you would like to request a place on the STOR-i masterclass, please send an email to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> before 12pm on Monday 27th February containing:
- Your name;
- Institution of study;
- Title of your PhD;
- If you wish to apply for funding to cover travel costs, please also provide the details outlined above.
We will inform you by the 29th February whether you have secured a place on the masterclass.
For details of further masterclasses which may be of interest to PhD students please see the STOR-i website: http://www.stor-i.lancs.ac.uk/training/events/masterclasses.
Best wishes,
Jonathan Tawn
