You mention Don Norman's literature and I cannot commend any other book higher than this for ease of meaning and an excellent entry point to the area of 'affordance'. Regarding camera/photography I would suggest that affordance also goes hand in hand with syntactic and semantic control behaviour. The graphics/motifs actually rarely 'afford' any modification of behaviour or ease of use. This would be an excellent area for research to be honest...

Subject: Affordances
Dear Friends
I was speaking to a colleague in another department about my musings on semiotics and photography, or the camera and he introduced this idea of affordances to me.
I've been very interested in the word and what it means. From what he say it appears to mean the many ways a thing can be used or interpreted.
I wanted to ask if you might have literature to recommend. I did a search I realised that Don Norman who posts here quite frequently has written about it in his book the Design of Everyday things, and I'll be collecting that from the library this afternoon.
I'm interested in how the camera can be Designed, re-conceived in various ways, without necessary changing it physically. It's uses, how its uses can be interpreted etc. I do apologize if all these seem vague. It is. But I'm also trying to shape up these ideas.
But think of how a portrait photography and Walte Benjamin would use the camera; one just to take a picture of something aiming at an aesthetic picture, another as a tool for critical consciousness raising. Can we then say these two persons have read in the camera very difference "affordances"?
Thanks
Jude
