Not sure where it comes from, I guess somebody here will know if it has
provenance. Google's first hit is to me ascribing it to "anon" (At my
age you have to defer to your younger self). I think it represents our
approach to both research and learning very well.
My other favourite, less pointful but more amusing, is
"Theory is when it doesn't work and you know why. Practice is when it
works but you don't know why. We do both, it doesn't work and we don't
know why."
My colleague Nicola Wood found that a while back on (I think) the
Norwegian Antarctic Survey website but I daresay they didn't invent it.
