Dear All
Apologies if this is already widely known but having recently heard about www.findalibrary.org.uk it occurred to me that members of the public are also likely to be searching Google for their nearest library but many public libraries are not registered as "Places" that can be seen on Google Maps and hence wont be easily located.
It's easy enough to register your libraries as "places" if you have a Google account. You just go to http://www.google.com/places, ignore the fact that it refers to registering your "business" and list your "place" as a "public library" (perhaps even adding "internet cafe" to the metadata so people looking for internet access realise you can get this in libraries too). Once you've entered all the relevant information about your library Google sends a letter to the specified address within 2 weeks and you follow the instructions in the letter to complete the listing.
On searching Google Maps, some libraries may already be listed as places but have incomplete information - for these you can just click on the title of the place and then click the "edit this place" option which should appear above the map or you can take charge of the "place" by clicking "Business owner?".
If you want your customers to be able to publicly "check-in" at your libraries on Facebook places or Foursquare and therefore promote them for you then this is also an option but I wont go into that here.
Kind regards
