We developed something in-house (a few years ago, things still get added!)
It wasn't started in an open-source way, and would be very hard to make it currently as a lot of the code is bespoke to the Leeds setup (e.g. interfacing with a catalogue with no API..!?)
Prior to this system, the academics (occasionally) sent us a word document with their reading list.
Our system allows a similar level of freedom - they aren't constrained to a set of objects like some systems - which was a key requirement at the time (we tried other more structured systems, take up was very low as the academics wanted to do things their way).
In general terms, this is what it does:
1. VLE tool to allow academics to send lists to the library
2. Dreamweaver tool to allow Library to link the list (performs real-time lookup against catalogue)
3. Holdings Report tool - how much of what's in a list do we have in stock, does any of it need moving (e.g. to a short-loan collection), what need ordering
4. Online Course Readings - integration with digitisation of core texts (tutor can chose if they do/don't want OCRs).
5. Bookshop (tutor can chose if they do/don't want their list sent to Blackwells etc.).
If anyone wants more information I can try and provide some.
Cheers,
John

Subject: Re: functional specification for resource list management?
I haven't come across one.
My only two pence is that, more so than other systems, Universities seem to have a different idea/need as to what a Resource/reading list system is.
- A Library 'book/resource buying system'?
(and if so, a system for academics to submit lists, for for lib staff to enter lists received, or both?)
- A interface for students to browse resources for a course, and easily link to online content
o Should it reflect the structure of course, e.g. week by week readings, and will this conflict with the need to structure the list so to specify to the library which books are essential reading (i.e. lots of copies needed) and which are recommended
o Do students expect to find everything for the course so where else such as the e-learning/vle, departmental website or printed course handbook, and if so should the reading list system integrate (supply information) to that place rather than being another location students need to visit.
- Does the University have a requirement that each course convenor has to fill out all the details for a course in a specific location (e.g. a form on the University portal), and therefore asking them to submit the course reading list go against this?
I'm not pretending I'm any expert on this, but having talked to a few people it seems the this is something that in connected to processes outside of the library (more so than other library systems), and each University will already have policies and procedures in place that a reading/resource list system will need to accommodate.
Like I say, just my (somewhat unhelpful) two pence

Does anyone know if there's a functional specification for resource list management out there?
Has anyone on the list developed one for their own use that they would be willing/able to share please?
Kind Regards,
Andrew Brown
