many thanks, again, Laurent.
> Since the Internet Archive is a non-profit organization, I suppose
that this is why G. have let them collect and distribute their scans.
If it had been a problem, G. would have already reacted long ago.
so, now i'm considering uploading whatever vols of the RHGF Hathi has (try
saying that fast) which are not already on the I.A., but can't decide what
"requests" means in the context of Hathi's "Access and Use Policies" relating
to "Public Domain or Public Domain in the United States, Google-digitized"
files:
"Google requests that the images and OCR not be re-hosted, redistributed or
used commercially. The images are provided for educational, scholarly,
non-commercial purposes."
do you suppose that "requests" has the Force of Law?
is the fact that Google doesn't seem to have these files on their own site
(or, at least doesn't have them in any way i can find) is because they were
scanned from the '68 Gregg reprint ed. (apparently still under copyright in
*some* countries?), rather than the 187x originals?
i am only able to download them from Hathi because i have access to the
institutional subscription, and i'm not particularly interested in
jeopardizing that access just to help out a bunch of hapless scholards world
wide (after all, i've got *mine* --let the rest of you peons Eat Cake).
>Reportedly, the Internet Archive has now accumulated around 900,000
books scanned by G. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Archive).
Wikipedia is On Strike today.
those in the U.S. can go to the site and find convenient contact information
for their representatives in The Best Congress Money Can Buy to express their
outrage at the latest shenanigans being perpetrated in that Odious
Institution, this time in a couple of pending bills which endanger the very
Freedom of The Innernets.
>Not bad, even though it means that 12 million books or so have yet to
be freed from the metadata inferno of G. Books...
that's 12 million which are somewhat more easily findable, as well.
