medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Jean-Luc,
Do the texts from Angers concerning this René really make him a bishop of Naples rather than of Sorrento?
On Renatus of Sorrento see no. 2 here (where, alas, 'René' has been systematically misspelled as 'Réné'):

This Renatus has an early medieval depiction in the Grotta di San Biagio at Castellammare di Stabia. See:
http://www.gdangelo.it/sanbiagio.htm
Renatus' portrait there has been variously dated from the ninth/tenth century to the the first half of the eleventh century. Hans Belting dealt with the site early in his _Studien zur beneventanischen Malerei_ (Wiesbaden, 1968). The latest scholarly contribution of which I'm aware is Gioia Bertelli, "La grotta di San Biagio di Castellammare di Stabia. Primi appunti per un recupero", _Cahiers archéologiques_ 44 (1996), 49-76.
For an eighteenth-century depiction of Renatus of Sorrento see:

Best,
John Dillon
