Luigi Burlini was a great rock physicist and a lessons of courage and
optimism. Despite his premature death in 2009, his contribution to the
development of rock physics and rock deformation studies remains unique.
He initially developed extensive studies on high strain zones throughout a
number of ground-breaking discoveries, while deforming carbonates,
anhydrites, quartz, gypsum, dolomite and polyphase aggregates to high
strains at high temperatures. He then developed the illuminating idea of
relating petrophysical measurements to rock deformation, throughout
innovative measurements of seismic velocities and electrical conductivity
at high temperatures and pressures. He further opened up the possibility
of studying acoustic emissions and seismic properties with the generation
and motion of fluids and melts.
His fundamental advancements in research as well as his lesson in courage
is still vigorously inspiring the rock physics community. The session aims
to provide an update on the dissemination and advancement of Luigi Burlini
outstanding work, while providing him the deserved tribute.
