Happy new year to all. Please forward this notice to anyone who
might be interested.
We seek a Ph.D. student who holds an M.S. with a specialty in
petrology/structural geology/mineralogy to work on a project
examining the occurrence and behavior of water in nominally anhydrous
minerals of the lower crust. The goals of the project are to examine
2.6 Ga granitoids and gneisses of the Athabasca granulite terrane of
northern Saskatchewan and to evaluate water concentrations and
speciation in quartz and feldspars in a spectrum of granitoids, from
unmelted, minimally deformed granite, through highly deformed and
partially melted granitic gneiss. Partitioning of water between
minerals and melt, the role of water in mineral reactions involving
only nominally anhydrous minerals, and the behavior of water in
minerals in shear zones are areas of focus of the study. Funding
includes a stipend, tuition waiver, health insurance, and travel
support for field work. This collaborative project involves Sheila
Seaman (igneous petrology, spectroscopy), Mike Williams (structural
geology, metamorphic petrology, tectonics) and Laurie Brown
(geophysics). Please send a note of interest to
