Hi Ruth,
apart from Bailon (1999) and Böhme (1977), already suggested by
Sheila, here is what I am aware of on amphibian skeletal
identification presently:
• Charissou, Isabelle (1999): Identification des restes trouvés dans
les pelotes de réjéction de rapaces, Supplément EPOPS scientifique. –
Epops – La revue des naturalistes du Limousin 44(1)
• Engelmann, Wolf-Eberhard / Fritzsche, Jürgen / Günther, Rainer /
Obst, Fritz Jürgen (1985): Lurche und Kriechtiere Europas, Leipzig
>>> Contains a chapter (pages 124-134) with good ID keys and
brilliant drawings for ilium and frontoparietale of various European
species of Discoglossus, Alytes, Bombina, Rana, Pelobates, Bufo and
Hyla.
• Glastra, Rob (1980): Osteologische Determinatie van de inheemse
Herpetofauna, Amsterdam
>>> Very good ID-criteria for the complete skeleton but poor drawings.
• Schaefer, Helmut (1932): Die Artbestimmung der deutschen Anuren
nach dem Skelet. – Zeitschrift für Anatomie und
Entwicklungsgeschichte 97, 767-779
>>> Keys for the pelvis of European Anura. Reliability of some
criteria has been questioned by Böhme (1977). Very good drawings.
• Stresemann, Erwin (1989): Exkursionsfauna von Deutschland, Band 3:
Wirbeltiere, 11. Auflage, Berlin
>>> Contains a short chapter (p. 105-107) with criteria for the ilium.
I found especially Böhme (1977) useful as he explains in detail the
advantages, limitiations, and reliability of the various ID criteria
for the different species and skeletal elements. Nevertheless I would
recommend a reference collection in addition.
I do not know Ratnikov (2001). Would you mind to pass me that paper?
Best wishes.
Christian
