medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

But to me this sounds more like a cathedral canon, and indeed that is the
definition the easily accessible electronic dictionaries give.
yes [i.e., no], "prebendary" surely isn't the term for "people who made a
donation to a religious institution (mostly monasteries, I expect) in exchange
for their upkeep for the remainder of their lives."

Prebendary, n. and adj.
1. The holder of a prebend; (formerly) a canon of a cathedral or collegiate
church who obtained income from a prebend; (in later use) an honorary canon in
any of various Anglican cathedrals.
though i have seen charters recording such donations, i don't know what the
[English or Latin] term might be for the *person* who made such a conditional
gift; nor can i recall exactly what terms were used to describe the conditions
of the gift.
but, it definitely weren't "prebendary" or anything like that.
nor "corrodian" (or any of its Latin cognates) --which word is unknown to the
OED.

English! Can someone supply me with the term used for people who made a
donation to a religious institution (mostly monasteries, I expect) in exchange
for their upkeep for the remainder of their lives? "Proventu" people in
Icelandic, and I cannot think of the English term!
