*exactly* what is described here: receiving board and lodging at
monastery (or the equivalent as a pension) for life in return for a gift
(of property, etc). It is precisely *not* the usufruct - the monastery
were taking a gamble as to whether the gift would ever cover their total
outlay.
i seem to have read into Meg's query what i was most familiar with from the
French charters from the Chartrain.

i don't recall ever seeing this in the French charters --a gift in exchange
for "upkeep."
not uncommon are gifts with the right of usufruct (though that word isn't used
in the charter) --often together with a bit of cash, given "in caritate"-- for
the rest of the person's life.
most often seen (as i recall) when a widow gives the family house to the
monastery, on condition that she may be allowed to live there for the rest of
her life.
somewhere in the cartularies of St. Peter's of Chartres and/or Tiron.
sorry for the projection.
