again, i'm unfamiliar with this in the region north of the Loire
(specifically, of course, the diocese of Chartres) --though it may well have
been the case in Southern France, which had many, many institutions and
customs in common with those in Italy.
the Romans didn't call it "Provence" for nothing, after all.
