medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Genevra Kornbluth <[log in to unmask]>
> I am actually in the midst of processing many photos from a recent trip
to Sens. I did not focus on the windows (and seeing the competition, I'm
just as glad I didn't!), but rather on the architecture
that's o.k.
the architecture is the only important part of the building, Genevra.
the idea that construction could have begun (in the apsidial chapels?) in the
mid-1130s is most intriguing, so i assume that you'll have plenty of detailed
snaps of such essential elements as column bases and capitals.
the sculptures of the western portals (1160s?) are also quite fine.
>and the treasury, including the vestments of Thomas.
i don't remember seeing those (since they're not sculpture), but look forward
to doing so.
>On the topic of ruined film, I think that there is a law of nature
specifying that disasters happen to our most difficult-to-get shots.
absolutely.
i mean, Duh.
in about '70 i lent a friend one of my Nikons because she was going to
Santiago.
she came back without the Nikon, which she had left on the top of her car and
drove away with it there, until it bounced down some Spanish road or other.
but, she did return with several rolls of Ektachrome, which i was developing
myself at the time --i had taken so many rolls in France-- using a four-roll
tank and a darkroom in my closet.
i did something in the development this batch (still don't know what, of
course) and they all turned out nearly black.
there was just enough of an over exposed image left that they might have been
salvageable, using a digital scanner and some appropriate softwhere.
i didn't think to save them until the day when that would have been possible,
however.
can't think of Everything, i guess...
