Dear all,
I would like to draw your attention to a fully funded Ph.D. position at Basel University, Switzerland.
PhD position in the Structural Geology Group, Basel University "Deformation of Quartz Gouge at Elevated Pressures and Temperatures"
In this project we seek to investigate the interaction of brittle and viscous deformation mechanisms in quartz and the transitions between deformation mechanism at elevated temperatures and pressures. The project will be based on experimental rock deformation (Griggs solid medium deformation apparatus) and microstructural analysis (Image and texture analysis, Synchrotron X-ray tomography, orientation imaging, cathodoluminescence and EBSD analysis). We seek to better understand the role of microcracking for dynamic recrystallization, the behavior of small clasts in the recrystallization process, and the microphysical processes during fracturing and viscous deformation in quartz. As quartz is one of the most investigated geological material, the results will have an immediate application for flow law and other information available for quartz.
This project is based at Basel University under the main supervision of Prof. Dr. Renée Heilbronner and will be carried out in collaboration with:
Tromsø University, Department of Geology (Prof. Holger Stünitz) for experimental work, and
Bern University, Institute of Geological Sciences (PD Dr. Marco Herwegh) for EBSD analyses.
The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation for three years, starting as soon as possible.
Requirements:
The successful candidate must hold an MSc degree or equivalent in Earth Sciences. He or she should have a solid background in Structural Geology and good technical and laboratory skills. We prefer a person who is well organized, who likes to work in the lab, who does not mind traveling between the Basel, Bern and Tromsø, and who is fit to collaborate efficiently with the different research groups. During terms, the successful candidate will have to serve as teaching assistant for undergraduate courses.
Application / Dead line:
Please send application before February 1st, 2012
to Prof Dr. Renée Heilbronner ([log in to unmask])
