Renoir makes conspicuous use of off-screen space in Le Crime de M. Lange and
Rules of the Game, while Carpenter's framing and camera movement keeps
viewers conscious of off-screen space. The most famous single example of
off-screen space is the oft-cited instance in Rosemary's Baby where Polanski
gets viewers to lean about in their seats trying to get a better glimpse of
Rosemary when she's partially obscured by a door.
