Putting my best shiny suit on and with a platinum white smile, its 11.50 here at Heartlands, using an LC/MSMS method. I don't believe our referred work "customers" should be treated as a cash cow

Where do you get it done for £6 or are you doing it in house?
We’re sending ours away at £23 a time.

While you are looking at money, check whether your trust is charging national tarrif for vitamin D in the light of rising QoF/NICE related requests.
We have discovered a tarrif of approx £1.50 buying a Vit D costing about £6.
with best wishes

The System One debate has been going on for some years - it also alters PTH units and one or two others. I'm not sure where the fauly lies, but I think Rick Jones knows what the latest is,
Are you QATY-good value John ?

This is a debate currently ongoing on the ACB IT list.
You should be aware that there is a GP surgery system called “System One” that is religiously converting your precious Vit D in nmol/L into mass units. Then showing any elegant reporting comments where you may have annotated rages for interpretation in nmol/L, underneath that mass result.
Why are they doing this and why are they refusing to change, you may well ask.
Their response (paraphrased) is as follows: “This problems have been in part caused by some of the new v20 QOF codes. The bounded lists which are within SystmOne are set by the Department of Health so we have been in touch to see if there is anything we can do to change these “
So the units the GP’s would like you to use are the ones they can redeem QOF repayments for. It all comes down to money in the end.
In the same sense I am sure that QALY (Quality adjusted life years) will ultimately become a QATY (Quality adjusted tax years) This is an estimate of how long you can stay healthy enough to continue working and paying tax.

This has already been done by Pathology Harmony, and more importantly signed off by leading members of the ACB, RCPath and IBMS - recommended nmol/L. See ‘Latest News’ on ACB home page (although dated Jan2011)
End of discussion?? Or just the beginning…

Deafening silence... does it mean agreement, you don't want the argument or you're on strike?

3 Arguments that depend on current or historical practice are trumped by (2). If (3) isn't trumped by (2) how can we ever make progress?
4 Ad hoc groups, special interest groups and professional societies should be involved in improving consistency but shouldn't oppose (2). They have a crucial role in managing transitions.
5 Preference (like plumage) don't enter into it.
