Dear colleagues,

If you get a chance, you may wish to look at this powerful data visualisation from one of our partners in a major research project on user innovation and open data.
Best wishes,

PRESS RELEASE ****Embargoed until 00.01hrs Friday 18 November 2011*****

CASUALTY MAPPING LAUNCHED FOR WORLD DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR ROAD TRAFFIC VICTIMS

A new mapping service showing the scale of fatalities and injuries from crashes on Britain's roads has been launched to coincide with this Sunday's (20th November) World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims organised by RoadPeace.

The mapping service developed by ITO World shows locations of road crashes over a ten year period and is available to the public free of charge.

See http://map.itoworld.com/roadcasualties-uk

RoadPeace's Executive Director, Amy Aeron-Thomas, welcomed the release of the mapping service, saying: "In the past year, much has been made of crime maps. This map should remind people that the real threat comes from travel on the road, with over three times as many people killed in crashes than by homicide. It also shows how urban crashes are concentrated along main roads, thus highlighting the need for slower speeds on these key routes."

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims gives public recognition to victims and families of road crashes which worldwide kill over 3,500 people every day.

The day was introduced by RoadPeace, adopted by the United Nations in 2005 and is endorsed by the World Health Organisation. Over twenty-five services of remembrance and other events will be held across Great Britain.

RoadPeace campaigns for the rights of road crash victims and their families. For further information or for details of World Remembrance Day services and events near you see www.roadpeace.org

The website has been developed by transport information specialists ITO World. Peter Miller, chief executive of ITO World, says: "We are honoured to be working with such an effective organisation and to be able to bring this important official casualty data to the attention of the public and policy makers through our online mapping."

ITO World Ltd (www.itoworld.com) is a UK based expert in the collection, management and presentation of complex transport data. It is the lead industrial partner in a five year government research project to understand innovative uses of information technology by transport users.

Casualty data is supplied by the UK Data Archive and is Crown copyright. Mapping is provided by MapQuest, OpenStreetMap and contributors and released on a cc-by-sa 2.0 license.
