Best wishes, Glenn PRESS RELEASE ****Embargoed until 00.01hrs Friday 18 November 2011***** CASUALTY MAPPING LAUNCHED FOR WORLD DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR ROAD TRAFFIC VICTIMS A new mapping service showing the scale of fatalities and injuries from crashes on Britain's roads has been launched to coincide with this Sunday's (20th November) World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims organised by RoadPeace. The mapping service developed by ITO World shows locations of road crashes over a ten year period and is available to the public free of charge. See http://map.itoworld.com/roadcasualties-uk RoadPeace's Executive Director, Amy Aeron-Thomas, welcomed the release of the mapping service, saying: "In the past year, much has been made of crime maps. This map should remind people that the real threat comes from travel on the road, with over three times as many people killed in crashes than by homicide. It also shows how urban crashes are concentrated along main roads, thus highlighting the need for slower speeds on these key routes." The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims gives public recognition to victims and families of road crashes which worldwide kill over 3,500 people every day. The day was introduced by RoadPeace, adopted by the United Nations in 2005 and is endorsed by the World Health Organisation. Over twenty-five services of remembrance and other events will be held across Great Britain. RoadPeace campaigns for the rights of road crash victims and their families. It provides access to detailed casualty mapping of every road death and injury in Great Britain from 2000-2010 inclusive. 3. A separate map is also being developed for USA road deaths from 2000-2009 inclusive and will be released in the USA during the coming week prior to Thanksgiving Day. 4. Mapping data for Road Casualties UK is provided by MapQuest using mapping data from OpenStreetMap and contributors. It is available on a creative commons licence (cc-by-sa 2.0). 5.
