medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
i think i've answered my own question.
here's the same "signature" in context:
http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b84497204/f402.zoom
(hit the zoom button on the bar just above the ms.)
it is, clearly, by the same hand that wrote the whole ms.
it's not a "signature" in the modern sense of the term, but a "monogram" of
the same sort as is found at the bottom of, say, royal charters going back (at
least) to the Carolingian monarchs.
here's one from Chuck the Simple:

and one of Louis VI (Le Gros) from 1132:

and here's Fat Louie's true photograph:
http://www.nobility-association.com/Louis_VI_of_France.gif
roughly speaking, his "signature" on the charter is as "real" as that
photograph.
Daguerre would be proud.
here's what a real "signature" looks like:

(foundation charter for St. Victor's of Paris, 1113)
and a photograph (taken from life) of "Hugh of St Victor teaching three monks"
