... I should add that I believe 'seriously underway by the C10' doesn't preclude 'but still a serious business in the C12'. This is a 200-year process, as I understand it.

In England, I think the latest opinion is it's rather earlier than that (seriously underway by late C10?), but that England appears to be ahead of the game... the most recent, a very impressive, key work being John Blair, The Church in Anglo-Saxon Society, OUP 2005.
