That doesn't seem to be the case in the examples we were considering.
Greatrex gives an instance from Bath Cathedral Priory where a group of
monks were presented to the bishop for ordination. They were distributed
over the orders of exorcist, acolyte, subdeacon and deacon. Each was to
be advanced by one grade.
