This is a very sad statement.
I have used the journal for years now, both for personal professional
awareness, and to support MSc librarianship students in their knowledge of
the work of public libraries.
Was the problem the cost of hard copy production, in which case could it not
have been produced as an e.journal? Or was it lack of contributions, in
which case a discussion over the network about the seriousness of the
situation could have helped.
It's very sad to see this useful journal die at a time when public libraries
are under such attach politically and economically.
Are there simply not enough public librarians left to sustain any interest?
Or are the one that are left so busy they don't have time to read or write
for the journal?
Strange that it hasn't generated more comment on this list?

Subject: Public Library Journal - cessation
The following was announced today at www.cilip.org.uk/plj
It is with profound regret that the Public Libraries Group of CILIP
announces the cessation of the Public Library Journal. For decades, PLJ has
been an excellent resource for public library professionals. The journal's
editorial board has worked extremely hard to bring readers the kind of high
quality content from which we have all benefitted as professionals, and
which has helped us learn about the latest thinking and innovative ideas in
public librarianship.
Ever-increasing funding problems have, unfortunately, had a significant
impact on PLG's ability to finance the production of the journal: it is no
longer something which the group can afford to sustain. This decision was
reached with great reluctance and after much consideration was given to
alternatives. We would like to thank the editorial board for their
dedication, professionalism and enthusiasm: without them, PLJ would not have
been the success it was.
As reforms to PLG progress, it is hoped that the spirit of PLJ will be
continued in a new form.
Thank you to all contributors from the last 26 years.
