This is terrible terrible news. If SCL Digital Group aren't able to get any concessions out of the publishers then we're going to have to try a different tack. Publishers are not legally allowed to withhold books from Libraries but are able to do so with e-books so let's try lobbying for a change to the legislation. If direct engagement with publishers fails then we'll need to start pulling the levers in the background instead and force them to acknowledge the truth that ebooks are books and libraries have a right (and a duty) to provide access to them. If the DRM that they have in place isn't fit for purpose then rather than sulkily flouncing off the pitch with their ball and leaving Libraries to take the consequences why not MAKE IT BETTER!
