I really like Bill the Snake. I think that this is a good way of communicating informally. Bill can make wry observations - because he's a snake.
I have also followed the Natural History Museum's Dippy tweets for ages https://twitter.com/#!/NHM_Dippy - and there are others (including some in American museums).
There is definitely a place for quirkier tweets as an animal, object or building. I'm more likely to read those tweets regularly rather than glance over them - and they can attract the interest of people who think that they're not very into museums but who do enjoy quirky humour. They can help develop a relationship with potential supporters.
