I didn't think to go by my office to look up an interesting and insightful passage from--I think it was -The Design of Everyday Things but I'm not sure--about the design of airliner dashboards being a source of "pilot error." I doubt that anyone has ever crashed Don's website, killing hundreds of passengers in the process but the principle seems to apply.
Maybe I'm misreading you but there seems to be some implication that "expert users" don't need design beyond a minimal level of organization. Real men don't eat quiche or use obvious visual hierarchies?
