J Eng Des Special Issue on Dependency Modelling in Complex System Design
(Sep 2011)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2011/09/26/j-eng-des-special-issue-on-dependency-modelling-in-complex-system-design-sep-2011/>
SEPTEMBER 26, 2011
Journal of Engineering Design
Special Issue on Dependency Modelling in Complex System Design
Dependency modelling techniques such as the Design Structure Matrix (DSM)
support complexity management by focusing attention on the elements of a
system and the dependencies through which they are related. The dependency
modelling perspective highlights structures in systems and their
environments. It can help to understand the implications of connectivity on
different aspects of system performance. It can assist in understanding,
designing, optimising and maintaining complex systems; including products,
processes and organisations.
Since the 'Design Structure System' was introduced in 1981, a great deal of
progress has been made exploring how different forms of dependency modelling
can support complex system design. Many approaches have been developed, for
instance based on DSM, MDM, and network analysis. Tools and methods have
been transferred into practice.
Much has changed in the three decades since Prof. Steward's seminal paper
was published. This special issue on Dependency Modelling in Complex System
Design will take stock of new developments and trends.
Authors are invited to submit research papers on any topic related to
modelling and/or management of dependencies in complex system design. All
papers will be peer-reviewed through the normal process.

Rutgers University announces "Science and Method in the Humanities," an
interdisciplinary graduate symposium to be held on March 2, 2012, with
keynote speakers Peter Dear (Cornell University) and Barbara Herrnstein
Smith (Duke University, Brown University).
The aim of the conference is to explore questions of method and methodology
in the sciences and in humanities scholarship that engages the sciences.
This one-day event will bring together scholars working across that
curricular divide for an interdisciplinary discussion of science and method,
ranging from the historical development of scientific methods and their
various historical re-articulations to broader concerns of methodology
across the humanities.

Bodily, psychic and spatial interiors can be mapped, traversed and violated
in multiple ways. This one-day conference will interrogate and re-evaluate
the contested terrain of the interior in its varied forms. It will examine
the interlacing and overlapping of different types of interiors, and seek to
re-position the 'interior' in critical terms. Moreover, it will attempt to
develop new ways of thinking about the relationship between the decorative
arts, furniture, bio-technologies, anatomy and space. The conference will
take place in The Courtauld Institute of Art Research Forum and conclude
with a keynote address in the Anatomy Theatre at King's College London.

On 12 March 1913, a naming ceremony took place in an empty paddock on a
hill. This rural environment was to become a city, the capital city of
Australia, the city of Canberra. The aspirations and the projections of the
Griffins' winning design for Canberra are an example of a world-in-making
involving the practices of design and craft. This issue of craft+design
enquiry will be published in 2013 - 100 years after this event and when, for
the first time in history, more than half the world's population live in
cities. By 2030, this will increase to at least 60% with significant growth
happening in cities of developing countries and the emergence of meta-cities
with 20 million inhabitants. 'The twenty-first century will be known as the
century of the city' (Tibaijuka, 2010).
This next issue of craft+design enquiry will focus on and highlight the
role, contribution and potential of craft and design practices to the urban
environment as well as the transformation of these practices - a world in
making.

Call for Participants
During Winter and Spring quarter 2012, the Art, Design, and Architecture
Museum (ADAM) at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) will
exhibit "Carefree California: Cliff May and the Romance of the Ranch House".
This first ever exhibition dedicated to the oeuvre of Californian architect
Cliff May draws from the archive housed at UCSB and offers a perfect
opportunity to think more generally about the teaching of Californian
architectural history. Through open, collegial round-table discussions, the
conference "Icon and Anonymity" will ask: Is there a specifically
Californian history of architecture, and what do we teach when we offer
instruction in it?

The Society of Automotive Historians is seeking proposals for papers to be
presented at its Ninth Biennial Automotive History Conference to be held in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, from April 12 through 14, 2012. The
conference theme is "A World of Cars: Manufacturers, Drivers and the Impact
of Globalization" and will focus on the international growth of the industry
initially by North American, later by European and more recently by Asian
manufacturers leading to the dominance of integrated multinational
corporations. Papers may address the impact of the automobile on worldwide
economic and social development, the roles of producer and non-producer
nations, and the influence of international requirements on business
policies and vehicle design. Papers may explore the transformation of
popular consciousness of the automobile from an iconic to a utilitarian
artifact as a consequence of its worldwide ubiquity. Proposals for papers on
automotive subjects unrelated to the conference theme will also be
considered. The conference will conclude with a final dinner and address by
Dr. Mira Wilkins, the distinguished economic and business historian.

*This call's theme:*
Visual rhetorics are by definition in the business of persuasion: in both
private and public spheres, such rhetorics attempt to change the behaviours
of both individuals and groups. From the "Stop" sign at the end of our
street, through the visual and verbal warnings on packs of cigarettes, to
the recruitment posters of our armed forces, common sense instruction blends
into health-expert authority insistence and then into state invitations to
die for one's country. In this first special issue of The Poster, we invite
contributions on the many and different ways in which visual rhetoric
intends and is used to inform, instruct, persuade and control our lives.
