medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi,
I wonder if the combined wisdom of the list can suggest what an Aspiciens book might be?
As John Dillon has already pointed out to me, Aspiciens a longe is the first responsory at Matins for the first Sunday of Advent.
However, the terms is obviously generalized to a type of book. Inventories of a church I am looking at
include , from 1318, Aspiciens book de sanctis which begins at Cross Mass in the fall and goes to Christmas, with music and readings
in 1394 it owned:
Aspiciens book with music and readings until Easter. Another from Easter to Lent, with music and readings, and another
Aspiciens book through Christmas
In 1461, an Aspiciens book that begins at Trinity with hymns and prayers (orationes) and de sanctis. (the "de sanctis" might be a separate book, the text is unclear.)
and
aspiciens bok from advent til easter with music and reading.
1525 we have
aspiciens book from advent through Whitsun, with music, hymns, and prayers.
Of course, there are lots of other liturgical books as well - is there a basic reference work to which I can go to look up such things? Not just what the different books contain, but the terms by which they are referred to?
Other than the following, for which again I thank John Dillon:
Michel Huglo, _Les livres de chant liturgique_ (Brepols, 1988; = Typologie des sources du Moyen Age occidental, fasc. 52).
Eric Palazzo, _A History of Liturgical Books from the Beginning to the Thirteenth Century_, tr. Madeleine Beaumont (Liturgical Press, 1998) and Cyrille Vogel, _Medieval Liturgy: An Introduction to the Sources_, tr. and rev. by William Storey and Niels Rasmussen (Pastoral Press, 1986).
All the best,
Meg Cormack
