Dear List Members
On routine biochemistry and haematology screening, a 41 year old
mother, breast feeding her second child for 4 months, taking no
medication of any kind.
serum cholesterol - 7.39 mmol/L
serum uric acid - 0.44 mmol/L
everything else is normal, apart from a raised ESR of 17 mm/hour.
Last measurements one year ago (during her pregnancy) showed no
cholesterol or uric acid abnormalities.
Does breast feeding raise the serum cholesterol? If so, why? Is it
appropriate to intervene actively to reduce cholesterol during breast
feeding? And why has her serum uric acid gone up?
What does the collective wisdom say?
regards,
Nick Miller
