EPSRC PhD studentship
Value of Award: £13,590 maintenance per annum (tax free) plus academic fees and a training support grant.
Applications are invited for a 3.5 year studentship funded by an EPSRC award. We are seeking a talented and highly motivated individual to award a PhD studentship in the Design of Real-Time Optimal Traffic Control Solutions for Heterogeneous Intelligent Traffic Networks within the Modelling group at the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS), the University of Leeds. This research is part of a 5-year research programme on Advanced Traffic Flow Theory and Control for Heterogeneous Intelligent Traffic Networks, funded by EPSRC.
Further information of the research programme can be found at:

Students should have at least an upper second-class honours degree (ideally a first class degree), or a combination of qualifications and/or experience equivalent to that level. Ideally, students should have a MSc degree in traffic, mechanical, electronics, computing or control engineering.
Successful candidates should ideally demonstrate:
* Good Programming Skills (MATLAB and/or C++)
* Experience in data fusion and pattern recognition
* Creativity coupled with the ability to generate practical outcomes from technical and field research
* The ability to disseminate research findings for scientific publication is a requisite.
Supervision team: The PhD research brings together of expertise and understanding of traffic flow dynamics and optimal control methods (Dr D Ngoduy, grant holder) with expertise in advanced statistics in transport (Professor David Watling). In addition to the expertise of both supervisors, the potential PhD student will benefit from ongoing collaborations between ITS and international academic partners of the research programme including the Queensland University of Technology, the Hong Kong University, the Delft University of Technology and the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong.
