From: Dr Jim Bugslag <[log in to unmask]>
> Perhaps this line of enquiry is barking up the wrong tree.
perhaps indeed, but it is definitely Down in the Weeds.
> Serendipitously,
what a concept.
gosh, you're not one of those credulous folks who believes in "accidents" are
you, Jim?
>I just started re-reading Benedicta Ward's Miracles and the Medieval Mind, in
which she deals with such visions of the Christ Child in the Mass (pp. 15ff)
as evidence of a new focus on the sacrament of the Mass -- "not so much the
'body of Christ which is the church' as 'the body of Christ which is the host'
" and the miraculous transformation of the host during the Eucharist. She
gives other 12th-century examples.
thanks, i'll take a look.
>Two references she gives might be of interest to you:
> P. Browe, Die Eucharistischen Wunder des Mittelalters (Breslau, 1938),
now, *that's* what any good Weed Eater needs: a Definitive German monograph,
on an obscure topic, from the last century.
>and L. Sinanoglou, "The Christ Child as Sacrifice," Speculum, 48 (1973),
492-509
good place to start eating, and right here on JSTOR.
thanks, Jim.
