medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A very interesting study could be made of saints' staffs, which commonly
worked such miracles and were quite a common sort of relic. A couple of
years ago, I saw Moses's staff in the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul -- or
one of them, anyway. One of these staffs must have been the one with
which he struck a rock in the Sinai desert, causing a spring to gush
from it to sustain the Israelites. And St. James's staff was attached
to a column near the confessio of Santiago de Compostela during the
Middle Ages for pilgrims to touch. Staffs seem to have been standard
equipment (along with bells) among Celtic saints.
Cheers,

After this, she uses her staff to make a stream run uphill and form a pool of hot water where she gives Kevin a bath, presumably to purify him for reentry into the monastic community after having been corrupted by the devil who had incited him to attack Moninna and her nuns. We are told that, thereafter, the pool is known as St. Kevin's bath. This pool is hot so it's probably for healing and not for drinking, but it's an interesting story.

I would also be interested in narrative accounts of wells or springs (i.e. sources of drinking water) being blessed or exorcised. Of course, St. Columba dealt with the Loch Nes monster or a relative in his day, but I'm really interested in smaller ponds, pools, especially if sources of drinking water.
